Reconsideration of Materials
In the event one finds material in the media center to be inappropriate, please discuss it with the Librarian/Media Specialist. If that does not resolve the problem, please print and fill out the Reconsideration form below and give it to the Media Specialist. The following process will be followed after the Reconsideration form is received by the Librarian/Media Specialist:
1. The completed form, signed by the principal, shall be forwarded immediately to the Supervisor of Library Media Services, who shall, within ten (10) days of receipt, process the request as follows:
a. Notification of the Request for Reconsideration shall be forwarded to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and the Coordinating Supervisor of Comprehensive Instructional Support.
b. A special Review and Evaluation Committee consisting of at least three (3) library media specialists and, if deemed necessary, and depending on the topic, supervisors or content area specialists, shall be convened by the Supervisor of Library Media Services to review the materials.
2. The special committee shall conduct an additional review within thirty (30) days of the filing of the request. The person requesting the reconsideration shall be invited to appear before the committee to elaborate on the request.
3. The special committee shall file a written report within ten (10) days of the meeting. The report shall include the committee’s findings with its affirmation or repudiation of the written reasons why the material should be excluded and shall recommend continuation, modification, or discontinuation of use of the material.
4. Copies of the written report shall be sent to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and to the Coordinating Supervisor of Comprehensive Instructional Support who will review the committee’s work and make a recommendation to the Supervisor of Library Media, based upon the committee’s report. The person requesting the reconsideration shall be given ten (10) days from the receipt of the report to file an appeal with the Chief Academic Officer who will appoint a selected committee to conduct an independent review.
5. Absent an appeal, the Chief Academic Officer shall instruct the Director of Curriculum and Instruction to take any action recommended by the special committee.
6. If the committee’s findings are appealed, the Chief Academic Officer shall advise the Superintendent of Schools who shall conduct a hearing in accordance with his or her powers under the Public School Laws of Maryland. If no appeal from the Superintendent’s decision is filed within thirty (30) days, the decision resulting from the hearing stands.
