Budgeting
Budgeting falls under the librarian role as program administrator. This is a major responsibility of the Librarian/Media Specialist. It provides students with new material that not only supports the curriculum but student interests as well.
PGCPS has allocated two dollars ($2.00) for each student enrolled in the school. This money should be used to purchase new library bound books, magazines, and processing supplies. The 2015 - 2016 school year library budget from the county is $1,646 based on 823 students. Electronic equipment should not purchased with this money because schools typically have separate budgets for electronic equipment. The new books should support the curriculum or student interest. A link for the curriculum map for Templeton is included below to offer assistance in determining whether the material supports the curriculum.
Based on the average book price ($19.32) compiled by the School Library Journal, $1,646 will add approximately 85 new titles to the collection. The figure derives from the average 2015 hardcover children’s titles for schools. Below is a link to the SLJ’s Average Book Prices 2015 chart.
As a rule of thumb, funds should be spent as quickly as possible. Please note, library budgets are subject to forfeiture during economic shortfalls or if funds are not spent during the fiscal year. Typically, the county Library Office requests funds be spent by December of the school year. Hosting book fairs is a great way to help supplement the budget. This allows additional funds that may be used to procure additional material/resources. Please note, book fairs should not interfere with the established library media schedule without prior approval from the school administration.
The Library Media Specialist may only order from approved vendors. Per county guidelines, a maximum of two vendors/jobbers are allowed per order.
