Collection Development
Materials should be ordered from the list of approved vendors available from the Office of Library Media Services with complete processing (i.e. barcodes and MARC records) according to county specifications.
Collection development is extremely important in a school library. Books in the library must support to the curriculum. The curriculum map below shows what students are learning. In addition, the curriculum map is consulted prior to placing an order. This ensures books added to the collection supports the curriculum and fosters student learning with high quality reading material.

Weeding
Weed the collection is one of professional responsibilities of the Media Specialist. Weeding the collection on a regular basis helps to keep the library materials organized and attractive for all users.
Weeding should follow the MUSTIE guidelines from the CREWS method:
M- Misleading (factually incorrect material)
U - Ugly (material is falling apart/moldy)
S - Superseded (a newer edition or up-to-date material is available)
T - Trivial (there is no justification for having the item in the collection)
I - Irrelevant (item does not meet the curriculum or personal needs of users)
E - Elsewhere (item can be easily obtained elsewhere such as the internet)
In addition to the MUSTIE guidelines, weeding should be performed on a regular basis. Below are suggested timeframes to weed. However, the Librarian/Media Specialist should use discretion when weeding. It is important to note, items marked for weeding should be cross-referenced in Wilson’s Core Collection database. Any item identified as "Most Highly Recommended” should not be weeded regardless of age and circulation status.
